Timmel, of Buffalo, who was honored by the Erie County Legislature in 2012 for his many years of volunteer work, died Sunday in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after a short illness. He was 96. Following his retirement in 1984, Mr. Timmel, accompanied by his wife, his children and his grandchildren, delivered meals to homebound people in and around Cheektowaga for nearly three decades for Meals on Wheels. He also volunteered for many years at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic Church in Cheektowaga, doing mechanical work and maintenance. A Eucharistic minister, he also offered Communion to patients in Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He was honored by the Diocese of Buffalo with the St. Joseph the Worker Award in 1993. He also was a member of the Knights of St. John and the Holy Name Society at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Church. Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of East High School and served in the Army in Europe during World War II, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. A wire fabricator, he worked for Heckman Wire & Iron Works and was shop foreman at Wire Products Co. in the Town of Tonawanda when he retired. His wife of 56 years, Ruth J. Heckman Timmel, died in 2002. Survivors include three daughters, Peggy Boggan, Pamela, and Teresa Tevens; two sons, Robert and Steven; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. today in St. Aloysius Gonzaga Church, 157 Cleveland Drive, Cheektowaga.
