TheDietrichFuneralHome.com Feb. 23, 1931 – April 22, 2015 Barbara J. Christy of Snyder, former University at Buffalo CSEA president, died April 22 at home after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. She was 84. Born and raised in Amherst, the former Barbara J. Dewey graduated from Amherst Central High School in 1948. From a young age she was infatuated with animals, owning a dog, cat and a horse when she was in high school. The pride and joy of her later years were her standard poodle Magic and a corgi named Jazz. She was a single mother who raised three boys on her own for many years. She was an avid sportswoman, teaching her sons how to play baseball. She was the first woman coach in the Joe McCarthy Little League when none of the fathers was available. She was a longtime employee at UB in both clerical and management positions, where she also served as grievance chair and president of Civil
Service Employees Association Local 602 from 1981 to 1989. She remained active in union activities after retirement. She is preceded in death by her two husbands, Roman Kauffman and Thomas Christy. Survivors include three sons, Glen, Dan and Thomas Kauffman; a brother, Edward Dewey; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A private family service will be held later.
