Service will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 10 am at the Church of the Messiah, 6436 Montgomery St., Rhinebeck, NY 12572 CURRAN – Caro Shugg
Age 91, of Buffalo, NY, passed away
peacefully on May 28, 2015 after a brief
illness. Caro was born in Brookline, MA,
the daughter of Carleton Shugg and
Sybil Carpenter. She attended Drury
High School in North Adams, MA, graduating
in 1940. She graduated magna
cum laude in 1944 from Bryn Mawr College,
where she majored in German,
minored in Spanish, and received the
Shippen Award for proficiency in a foreign
language. On December 29, 1945,
she married George Lally Curran, M.D.,
at Christ Church in Short Hills, NJ. Caro
served from 1944-46 as an ensign in
the United States Naval Reserve, where
she supervised a “watch” of forty persons.
She subsequently worked in the
Admissions Office of Bryn Mawr College
and the Office of the Registrar at
New York University. She held positions
at the Hadle Agency and the American
and Foreign Teachers Agency. She
also worked at the Alumnae Advisory
Center in New York City, a career counseling
and placement center for women,
first as an Assistant to the Director and
then as an Assistant Director. Caro
made her home in Buffalo, NY since
2007. Before moving to Buffalo, she
lived in Red Hook and Rhinebeck, NY,
where she was a parishioner at the
Church of the Messiah and a longtime
volunteer in the medical records department
of Northern Dutchess Hospital.
Caro always loved mastering new
languages. She taught herself to speak
Italian ahead of taking a trip to Italy in
her later years. She was preceded in
death by her husband, George Lally
Curran; she is survived by her children,
George L. Curran III of Shenandoah,
VA, Richard R. Curran, M.D., of Buffalo,
NY and Stephen P. Curran of Chadds
Ford, PA; a sister, Sylvia Shugg of
Brewer, ME; a brother, Wallace Shugg,
of Baltimore, MD; seven grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild. She is also
survived by many loving nieces and
nephews. A memorial service is to be
held July 23, 2015 at 10:00 AM at the
Church of the Messiah, Rhinebeck, NY.
