Carolyn R. Gromer, of Williamsville, a retired teacher and former executive director of the Literacy Volunteers of America of Buffalo and Erie County, died Sunday in Beechwood Homes, Getzville. She was 88.
Born Carolyn Ruth Grosse in Maywood, Ill., she completed her studies at the University of Chicago in two years on a full tuition Marshall Field Scholarship and graduated in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy.
During her teens, she worked as a copywriter at the Chicago Daily News and was a personal shopper at the Marshall Field flagship store in Chicago.
While raising her family, she lived in Bay City, Mich., Massena and Bloomfield Hills, Mich. She attended Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree and with top scholar honors when she received a master’s degree in teaching.
Mrs. Gromer moved to Williamsville in 1967 and taught fourth grade for 10 years in the new Country Parkway Elementary School. She also served on an advisory council to the Williamsville school superintendent.
She became a tutor with Literacy Volunteers when it was just starting. She served as executive director on a volunteer basis from 1986 to 2001. She was honored with a certificate of merit.
Active in the Amherst Lutheran Church, she was a lector and Sunday school teacher, served on the Board of Elders and sang in the choir. She also was a member of the Amherst Lutheran Book Club.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking, crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She also audited classes at the University at Buffalo. She and her husband traveled widely to Antarctica, Europe and China.
Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Robert W., retired production superintendent at the General Motors plant on East Delavan Avenue; a son, Philip D.; three daughters, Lisa K. Meneau, Sharon G. Hoffman and Carolyn; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Amherst Lutheran Church, 5125 Main St., Williamsville.
