Sheard of Amherst, who loved gardening and cooking, died Feb. 2 in Elderwood in Williamsville. She was 89. Born in Webster, Mass., Mrs. Sheard obtained a bachelor’s degree from Simmons College in Boston in 1945. She met her husband, John, while working for the Chemical Warfare
Service at Massachusetts Institute of Technology that year. They married on July 12, 1947. Having also lived in Lewiston, Mrs. Sheard was an active member and officer in the Women’s Association of the Presbyterian Church in Lewiston, and later in the Amherst Community Church in Snyder. After raising her four children, she earned a master’s degree in education from the University at Buffalo in 1979. She and her husband loved to travel and made several trips to the Caribbean, Europe, Canada and Mexico. They spent the winter in Palm Bay, Fla., and the summers in Western New York for 14 years. Mrs. Sheard played the violin, loved to cook and was an avid gardener . In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons Christopher and Samuel; daughters Martha McMahon and Suzanne Walsh; and one granddaughter. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Amherst Community Church, 77 Washington Highway, Snyder.
