Dr. Albert Murty Kraus, an ophthalmologist who practiced with the Buffalo Medical Group, died Saturday in his home in Snyder after a brief illness. He was 84.

Born in Buffalo, he was a 1950 graduate of Canisius High School, received a bachelor’s degree from St. Vincent College in 1954. He received his medical degree from the University of St. Louis in 1958.

After completing his residency at Georgetown University Hospital, he served as a lieutenant commander in the Navy Medical Corps, based in Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Returning to Buffalo in the early 1960s, he joined Buffalo Medical Group and maintained a practice on High Street.

He retired about 20 years ago.

An avid skier, he was a member of the Sitzmarker Ski Club, now the Buffalo Ski Club, for more than 50 years and skied until two years ago.

Also a sailing enthusiast, he was a member of the Buffalo Canoe Club for more than 50 years and served on its board of directors.

He also enjoyed tennis, traveling and reading and was an animal lover.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, the former Elizabeth Anne Coleman; two daughters, Katherine Kraus Shea and Suzanne Kraus Wrobel; a son, Albert L.; a brother, John; and six grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, 1317 Eggert Road at Main Street, Eggertsville.
