TheDietrichFuneralHome.com June 8, 1926 – Oct. 11, 2014 Dr. Eugene E. Cisek, of Amherst, a retired orthopedic surgeon, died Saturday at his Amherst home. He was 88. He was a 1942 graduate of East High School, where he was on the track and cross-country teams. His college career at Canisius College, where he joined the Naval Reserve, was interrupted by wartime service in the Pacific and Okinawa. He resumed classes after World War II, graduating in 1948. He then attended Georgetown University Medical School, graduating in 1952. Dr. Cisek interned at Mercy Hospital, followed by an orthopedic surgical residency at Buffalo General Hospital, Children’s Hospital and Veterans Hospital. He also served as a clinical instructor at the University of Buffalo Medical School. Dr. Cisek maintained a general orthopedic practice for 30 years, and was an attending orthopedic surgeon at Mercy Hospital, Children’s, Meyer Memorial, Erie County Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital, where he was director of the orthopedic department and served as president of the medical staff in the early 1970s. He received the Caritas Award in 1992 from St. Joseph Hospital. Dr. Cisek became an orthopedic consultant for workers’ compensation and liability cases for 17 years after retiring from his medical practice. He was a life member of the Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Erie County Medical Society, Eastern Orthopedic Association, American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society and American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians. He was certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Cisek, who was a member of the Canisius College glee club and appeared as an accordion soloist with the group, enjoyed classical music and jazz, and was fond of opera. He was an avid reader of history, particularly the Civil War period, and had visited many Civil War battlefields. He started a group of retired physicians called the Grey Docs, which met monthly for lunch, conversation, reminiscence and comradeship. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ruth, three daughters, Sally A., Mary Lou Szewczyk and Barbara E.; a son, Eugene P.; and two brothers, Richard and Robert. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph University Church, 3269 Main St
