Frederick W. Eye, of Snyder, a retired operating engineer who trained other operating engineers, died Sunday in St. John Baptist Hospice House after a short illness. He was 85.
Born in Buffalo, he was a 1948 graduate of Seneca Vocational High School.
Mr. Eye began working as a crane operator in 1949 and spent many years helping build the Southern Tier Expressway.
After he retired in 1975, he became an instructor at the training school operated by Local 17 of the International Union of Operating Engineers. From 1988 until he retired in 1991, he was administrative manager of the school.
He was a member of Local 17 for more than 60 years and served as an officer.
Mr. Eye was a parishioner for more than 60 years at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic Church, was an officer in the Holy Name Society and was a member of the senior citizens group.
He also was active in the Amherst Senior Citizens, where he enjoyed playing cards regularly, and spent winters in Clearwater, Fla.
His wife of 60 years, the former Nancy T. Klawon, died in 2012.
Survivors include a son, Steven; two daughters, Sandra Sendlak and Barbara Stanley; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Friday in St. Aloysius Gonzaga Church, 157 Cleveland Drive, Cheektowaga
