at Nov. 24, 1937 – Oct. 11, 2013 Gail M. O’Brien, of Williamsville, a longtime teacher in the Williamsville schools, died Oct. 11 at Brothers of Mercy Nursing Home. She was 75. The former Gail Crowl was born in Buffalo and was a 1955 graduate of Cleveland Hill High School where she was an accomplished synchronized swimmer before going on to earn a master’s degree in education from Brockport State College. While at Brockport, Ms. O’Brien was chosen to appear in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Ms. O’Brien spent much of her career in education at Casey Middle School as a physical education and health teacher. She also served as a swimming coach and instructor before retiring in 1999. An exceptional knitter, seamstress, quilter and gardener, family members remembered Ms. O’Brien as “a generous and loving grandmother to her four grandchildren.” Survivors include a son, Mark; daughter, Lisa McClure; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Jane Hyzy and Linda Hughes. A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m., Nov. 9 from Dietrich Funeral Home, 2480 Kensington Ave., Amherst.
