by REGER FUNERAL HOME, INC. April 10, 1920 – March 29, 2014 John J. “Jack” Fahey, a World War II veteran and retired teacher, died Saturday in Weinberg Campus, Getzville. He was 93. Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Bennett High School and interrupted his studies at Canisius College to serve in the Army during World War II. Assigned to the 106th Field Artillery, he was a forward observer on reconnaissance flights to spot bombing targets in Europe and attained the rank of first lieutenant. Later, he was an officer at a prisoner of war camp in Belgium. Returning from service, he completed his bachelor’s degree and took graduate studies at Canisius, where he was a member of the DiGamma Honor Society. Mr. Fahey became a faculty member in the Buffalo schools in 1955 and taught history at Riverside High School, Clinton Junior High School and Buffalo Evening High School, retiring in 1985. Following the death of his wife, he returned to the Buffalo schools in 1986 as an attendance teacher in charge at the Catholic and private schools. He retired for a second time in 2000. A former resident of Buffalo and Williamsville and the father of eight, Mr. Fahey was a 58-year member of St. Aloysius Gonzaga Parish, where he attended Mass daily and volunteered at bingo games and church parties. He also was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Fahey was honored as a 10-gallon blood donor by the American Red Cross. A fan of his granddaughters’ softball games, he became the unofficial mascot of the Canisius College girls softball teams in 1990. He helped elderly neighbors with their lawns and snow shoveling, and drove cancer patients to their treatments at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. In 2011, he participated in an Honor Flight with other veterans to visit the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. His wife of 36 years, Jodie Best Fahey, died in 1986. Survivors include three sons, John P., Mark and Joseph; three daughters, Franny Antoniadis, Trish Cosgrove and Mary Fahey; a sister, Joan Wedgwood; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Aloysius Gonzaga Church, 157 Cleveland Drive, Cheektowaga.
