Michael D. Downey
Michael D. “Mike” Downey
Passed away July 6th, 2025 at the age of 77.
Beloved father to Jennifer (Timothy) Burke and Kathryn (Brent) Werner. Proud and devoted grandfather to Molly, Bridget, Erin, Maeve, Finley, and Lochlann.
Beloved son of the late Eugene and Kathleen Downey.
Dear brother to Tim (Maripat) Downey and the late Kathleen (Bernard) Martin and Dennis Downey.
He is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Mike was a respiratory therapist for about 40 years. He thoroughly enjoyed and took great pride in his work. He was very well – liked and respected by his patients and his co-workers.
Once he retired, Mike embraced his love of photography. He spent hours photographing scenes around the city of Buffalo, then edited and framed the beautiful finished products. He was quite talented but, more importantly, he was so proud of his work and truly enjoyed it.
Mike was always very humble, kind, and genuine. He would do anything for anyone. When we remember him, what comes to mind is his caring and gentle spirit, his honesty, his deep faith, his intense pride in his family, and his ability to start a conversation with anyone he met.
Mike was truly a special person. Our lives will not be the same without him. He will be incredibly missed by so many.
No prior visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass on Friday July 18, 2025 at 9:30 am at Christ the King Church, 30 Lamarck Dr. Amherst, NY 14226. Flowers gratefully declined. Memorials may be made to Hospice Buffalo. Online condolences may be placed at www.TheDietrichFuneralHome.com
My deepest sympathy to Mike’s family. I remember him well from Inhalation Therapy at ECC Class of ‘72. In fact he was the first person I met from our class as we navigated our Fall class registration. We met up again at Millard Fillmore Suburban when he took a Respiratory Therapy job. He was a wonderful person and he will be missed by so many. His job is well done may he rest in peace.
My deepest condolences to Mike’s family. May your heart and soul find peace and comfort. I am so sorry for your loss. Mike was my closest friend. We lived in the same building when I resided in the Buffalo area. When I moved back to Saratoga Springs, NY, our friendship grew even stronger. We would talk at length every single day, sometimes several times a day. We were never at a loss for words. Our shared interest in photography was just one of the many traits that we shared in common. Mike was the most giving person that I ever knew. He would always help out those in need, many times at his own expense. There will never be another friend like Mike. He will be sorely missed.
Saddened to hear of Mikes passing. He is in our prayers and send sympathies to the families. Enjoyed the past times we had with him. He was a bright light added to each moment in everyone’s time together. I know he’ll rest in peace.
Hugs and prayers to Mike’s family. I went to the Respiratory Care program at ECC with Mike also. Always a great guy.
