July 1, 1917 – Nov. 5, 2013 After Pliny H. Hayes III retired as associate headmaster of Nichols School, the school created an award in his name to recognize a seventh-grader whose general character and integrity inspire others. Mr. Hayes, who died Tuesday in DeGraff Skilled Nursing Facility, North Tonawanda, will be remembered for his interest in students and education, as well as for his kindness. He was 96. Mr. Hayes’ career at Nichols spanned 40 years, from 1944 to 1984. A Buffalo native, he attended Nichols and was a graduate of Yale University. His particular expertise was the classics, and he taught Latin and Greek throughout his years at the school. In his later years, he and his wife, Patsy, visited Greece many times. They also camped on Vancouver Island, Labrador and in the Southwest. Mr. Hayes received Nichols’ distinguished alumni award in 1980, and he was honored for his contributions to the school in 1991 with one of several centennial awards. The school also created the Pliny H. Hayes Award, which recognizes the seventh-grader whose commitment to excellence and enjoyment of new experiences stimulates others and whose general character and integrity inspire others. Mr. Hayes was an accomplished pianist in his youth, giving recitals and concerts at Yale until he was stricken with tuberculosis. He began teaching at Nichols when he recovered. He co-founded the North Shore Yacht Club at Bertie Bay, Ont., with his brother, Gordon, in 1937. Mr. Hayes is survived by two sons, Pliny “Mike” IV and Roland L.W.
Services will be private.
