Jan. 14, 1935 – Dec. 25, 2014
Samuel Torrelli, of Akron, a retired construction contractor, died on Christmas Day in Buffalo General Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was 79.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Torrelli began working for the family construction business, Frank Torrelli Inc., at age 12 and joined Cement Masons Local 511 in 1953.
He became head of the company in 1982 and changed the name to Torrelli Concrete Construction Inc. He retired in 1997 because of illness.
A resident of Cheektowaga and Lancaster before moving to Akron in the late 1990s, he designed and built several custom homes.
Active in Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Bowmansville for 26 years, Mr. Torrelli often donated his construction skills. He and his wife coordinated the parish’s marriage preparation program for engaged couples for nine years.
An avid restorer of antique cars, his prized vehicle was a 1937 Oldsmobile four-door sedan, which won many awards in local classic car shows.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, the former Mary Ann Scheeda; two sons, Dr. Frank A. and Samuel J.; a daughter, Michelle Giamberdino; and eight grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 5771 Buell St., Akron.
