www.TheDietrichFuneralHome.com Oct. 4, 1931 – Jan. 26, 2016 Theodore E. Kurtz, a special education teacher and administrator, died Jan. 26 in the Weinberg Campus, Getzville, after a short illness. He was 84. Born in Brocton, he was a graduate of Brocton High School and served in the Army in Alaska during the Korean War. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Fredonia State Teachers College in 1959 and a master’s degree in administration from SUNY Albany. Mr. Kurtz began his career as a special education teacher in the Orchard Park schools in 1960. He joined the state Education Department in 1966, moved to Schenectady and advised schools on developing special education curricula. He returned to Buffalo in 1977 and worked at the department’s Batavia office. After retiring, he served as principal of the Gateway School from 1990 to 1992. He received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the state Education Department in 1988 and an Excellence in Education Award from the Association for Special Education Administrators in 1989. A Teacher Achievement Award is given in his name by the New York State Educators of the Emotionally Disturbed. He helped found the Hilbert College Senior Men’s Basketball League and competed in the New York State Senior Olympics. He also was a marathon runner. His wife of 59 years, the former Jeanette Kinecki, died in 2014. Survivors include a daughter, Michele; two sons, Greg and Doug; two brothers, Edward and James; and two grandchildren. A private family service was held.
