Thomas J. Sager of Williamsville, who enjoyed a 40-year career in the automobile industry and amateur sports car racing, died Jan. 1 at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. He was 76.
Born in Watertown, he graduated from Kenmore High School in 1956. He had a love for sports cars and attended the last Grand Prix run through the streets of Watkins Glen in 1952. He obtained a competition license with Sports Car Club of America in 1960 and competed in a Triumph TR3 at Watkins Glen with Buffalo-based Ecurie Pip team.
In 1960, he married Elizabeth Krotz of Kenmore and accepted a position with Chrysler’s sales and service training division in Los Angeles. In 1963, he and his wife returned to Western New York, where he opened Auto Glamour, an auto reconditioning company in Rochester. In 1973, he and a partner opened South Towns AMC in Hamburg, where he served as the company’s president. From the late 1970s until his retirement in 2008, he held a variety of positions, including an auto wholesaler, retailer, lessor and equipment provider.
