Miskey, an Army veteran of World War II and retired safety official with the state Department of Labor, died Wednesday in his Cheektowaga home. He was 96. Born in Buffalo, Mr. Miskey was a 1937 graduate of McKinley Vocational High School. He became a bricklayer for Metzger Construction Co., returning to his alma mater to work on a stair project. Mr. Miskey was drafted into the Army in 1941 and graduated from the Ordnance School at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. He was assigned to the 802nd Ordnance Light Maintenance Company, 102nd Infantry Division, and served in the European Theater and the United States, attaining the rank of captain. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his service in Germany between November 1944 and May 1945. In 1947, Mr. Miskey went to work as a construction safety inspector for the Labor Department’s Bureau of Construction Safety. Ten years later, the bureau opened an office in Buffalo and he was named its supervisor. He was responsible for activities in the 13 counties of Western New York, ranging from enforcing safety regulations of workers in the construction and demolition industries to inspecting ski tows. He was appointed assistant industrial commissioner for the Buffalo District in 1969 and worked in that capacity until his retirement from the state in 1975. From 1979 to 1987, he worked as an inspector and safety coordinator for the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, during the construction of the rapid transit system. Mr. Miskey was a member of Local 45, Bricklayers, Masons and Plasterers International Union of America. He was a former president of the Western New York Safety Conference and a past associate member of the Western New York Society of Safety Engineers. He also was a member of Troop I, Post 665, American Legion. His interests included golfing, and he was a longtime member of Lancaster Country Club. His wife of more than 50 years, the former Trude Kerr, died in 2005. Survivors include a daughter, Pamela; and a son, Craig.
