Dr. David S. Conschafter, a chiropractor in Cheektowaga for 27 years, died unexpectedly last Friday in his Williamsville home. He was 60.

Born in Davenport, Iowa, the son of a chiropractor, he came to the Buffalo area with his family as a child and was a graduate of Williamsville North High School.

He attended colleges and lived in the Midwest in the 1980s. After graduating in 1990 from the Logan University College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, Mo., a suburb of St. Louis, he returned to the Buffalo area and set up practice in Cheektowaga in a building where his father also had a practice.

He went on to earn an advanced certificate in whiplash and brain injury traumatology from the Spine Research Institute of San Diego.

Active in the chiropractic community, Dr. Conschafter visited Disney World annually, loved penguins and enjoyed relaxing in his hot tub.

His wife of 28 years, the former Julie Anne Berendes, a registered nurse, died in 2011. He and his fiancee, Dr. Margaret A. Novotny, an obstetrician and gynecologist, had planned to marry in April.

Survivors also include two sons, Scott and Mark; his parents, Dr. Robert and Joan; two brothers, Jeffrey and Bradley; a sister, Sally Porter; and a grandson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 5771 Buell St., Akron.
