Wallmeyer, of Amherst, an electrical engineer and amateur piano player, died Sunday in the Weinberg Campus, Amherst, after a short illness. He was 89. Born in Buffalo, he was a 1945 graduate of Buffalo Technical High School and earned an associate degree in electronics from Alfred State College in 1947, where he operated his own radio station. Mr. Wallmeyer worked in electronics research and development for Moore Business Forms in Niagara Falls for 27 years. He retired in 1989. He was a life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. A keyboard player since his youth, despite an industrial accident that cost him four fingers on his left hand when he was a teen, he gave countless piano and organ concerts in retirement communities, nursing homes and senior centers in Amherst and Clarence, where he was known as “Gene the Piano Player.” His daughter, Laura Dierken, said he continued playing until a few days before his death. “Everyone truly marveled at him,” she said. He was a member of the Buffalo Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society and the Friends of the Riviera Theatre and played the theater organs in the Riviera and in Shea’s Performing Arts Center. He was active in the Clarence RSVP (Retired Seniors Volunteer Program) and was honored as a volunteer of the year at the Weinberg Campus and by the Amherst Senior Center. He also was an amateur radio operator and enjoyed sailing and astronomy. A telescope maker and an early member of the Buffalo Astronomical Association, where he served a term as president, he taught classes at the Buffalo Museum of Science and helped refurbish the telescope in the museum’s observatory. A Cheektowaga resident from 1952 to 1985, he lived in Clarence before moving to Amherst in 2000. He was a 64-year member of St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, the former Loraine Block; two sons, Ken and Tim; four daughters, Mary Bashore, Jane Ludwig, Laura Dierken and Julie Feldman; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Aloysius Gonzaga Church, 157 Cleveland Drive, Cheektowaga.
