Dr. Roger J. Goergen, a retired dentist who helped write the ethics code for the Town of Amherst, died Friday in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after a short illness. He was 93.

Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Canisius High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Canisius College. He graduated from the University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in 1947, and he served in the U.S. Naval Medicine and Dental Corps, attaining the rank of lieutenant. He earned the American Defense
Service Medal and was named an honorary citizen of the Republic of Korea.

Dr. Goergen maintained a dental practice for 52 years, retiring in 1998. He was a member of the Eighth District Dental Society and the New York State Dental Society.

A committeeman for the Amherst Conservative Party, he was chairman of the Amherst Government Study Committee and led its Subcommittee on Ethics, which updated the ethics code for the Town of Amherst in 1990. He subsequently was named to the town’s first Board of Ethics, which administered and enforced the code.

Dr. Goergen’s interests included history, travel and outdoor activities, such as hunting, fishing and bird watching.

His wife, the former Jeanne M. Cleary, an elementary school teacher, died in 2007.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ellen; a son, Joseph; and two grandchildren.
